Necklace Length Guide: How to Choose the Right Length

Bijumi necklaces in different lengths from a jewelry mystery box

Necklace length is the most underrated decision in jewelry. It changes where a piece sits, what necklines it works with, and whether a layered look holds together or tangles. This guide covers the standard lengths, what each one is actually for, and how to find the length that suits you.

The standard necklace lengths

Jewelry sizing is measured in inches, and each length sits at a predictable point on the body.

  • 14 inches (36 cm) — choker. Sits at the base of the neck. Statement territory: bold and deliberate, and it needs an open neckline to work.
  • 16 inches (40 cm) — collarbone. Sits just below the collarbone. The classic short length, and the most common starting point for a first necklace.
  • 18 inches (45 cm) — princess. Sits on the collarbone or just below it, depending on your frame. The most versatile length, and the safest gift.
  • 20 inches (50 cm) — matinee. Sits below the collarbone, above the bust. Good over higher necklines.
  • 22 inches (55 cm) — below the bust. A longer, more relaxed line that works well with a pendant.
  • 24 inches (60 cm) and beyond — opera and rope. Falls towards the bust or below. Effective alone, and the best length for a focal pendant.

If you remember one thing: 18 inches is the safest choice when you do not know someone's preference, because it suits most frames and most necklines.

How to choose a length by neckline

The length that looks best depends on what you are wearing more than on the necklace alone.

  • V-neck or scoop: a shorter necklace (16–18 inches) fills the open space. A long chain can disappear into the neckline.
  • Round or high neck: go longer (20–24 inches) so the necklace sits on the fabric rather than disappearing under the collar.
  • Buttoned shirts: a matinee length worn over the shirt, or a short chain worn inside the collar.
  • Strapless or off-shoulder: almost any length works, because the neckline is completely open — this is where a choker or a long pendant both look deliberate.

How to find your own preferred length

Rather than guessing, do this once:

  1. Tie a piece of string or ribbon around your neck at the length you like the look of.
  2. Adjust until it sits where you want it, then mark the point.
  3. Lay it flat and measure in inches or centimetres.

If you already own a necklace you wear constantly, measure that one — it is a more honest answer than any chart, because it reflects what you actually choose in the morning.

Length and layering

If you plan to layer, length is not just about where one necklace sits — it is about the gap between them. Keep at least two inches between each layer, or the chains cross constantly and tangle.

A reliable three-layer setup is 16–18 inches, 20–22 inches and 24–30 inches: enough separation that each layer stays visible and stays untangled. Our guide to layering necklaces without tangling covers the spacing, chain weights and the one-clasp trick in detail.

Length and frame

There is no rule that says a certain height must wear a certain length, but proportion is worth a thought:

  • On a petite frame, a very long chain can overwhelm the line. Shorter lengths tend to look more balanced — and a long chain often works better doubled.
  • On a taller frame, longer lengths sit where they were designed to sit rather than dropping low, so opera and rope lengths are easier to wear.

The exception is intentional: if you like a long chain worn low, that is a style choice, not a mistake.

Buying a necklace for someone else

Length is one of the few jewelry decisions that does not require a measurement, which makes necklaces a safer gift than rings. If you are unsure:

  • Choose 18 inches — the most broadly flattering default.
  • Avoid extremes (choker or opera) unless you know she wears them.
  • An adjustable or extendable chain removes the risk almost entirely.

FAQ

What is the most common necklace length?

18 inches, often called the princess length. It sits on or just below the collarbone and suits most frames and necklines, which makes it the safest choice for both buying and gifting.

What necklace length should I wear with a V-neck?

A shorter length — typically 16 to 18 inches — fills the open space created by the neckline. A long chain tends to disappear into the V.

How do I know my necklace length without a tape measure?

Measure a necklace you already wear often: lay it flat and measure from end to end. It reflects what you genuinely choose, which is more useful than a generic size chart.

What length should I choose for layering?

Keep at least two inches between layers. A practical three-layer combination is 16–18, 20–22 and 24–30 inches.
